Organization and Business Listings

These can be submitted by anyone using the Submission menu on the public area of the Alternatives HR website.

These are free text listings for Hampton Roads Alternative social, religious, and political organizations; non-profits; businesses; services; entertainers; and so forth.

Adult social clubs, businesses, services, entertainers, and related items may also be submitted. However, those will go in a separate “Mature Audiences” area of the website.

Event Listings

These can be submitted by anyone using the Submission menu on the public area of the Alternatives HR website.

We currently have specific calendars for the following communities:

  • LGBTQ+
  • Pagan / New Age
  • Alternative Orientations and Lifestyles
  • Mature Audiences

In general, event listings should relate in some way to the Hampton Roads Alternative communities. These can include local events, gatherings, conferences, and so forth.

A few examples of acceptable events:

An event hosted by a local Alternative business or organization.

An event hosted by a general public organization that highlights or in some way relates specifically to our Alternative communities.

An event that isn’t specifically Alternative, but that highlights an openly Alternative performer, organization, etc.

A few examples of non-acceptable events:

A general public event that does not specifically relate to Alternative folks in any way. For example, many LGBTQ folks like musicals, theater, cultural and arts events, but unless the event is LGBTQ or Alternative community specific, it doesn’t qualify for an event listing on this site. Another example: many Pagan folks are also into sci-fi and fantasy, but unless the event is Pagan or Alternative community specific, it doesn't qualify for an event listing either. On the other hand, if there is programing related to our Alternative communities, it does qualify for inclusion. It’s nothing personal, we just want the event listings to be focused.

Articles

Any Registered member of this site may submit an article.

Additionally, we would like to eventually include a handful of regular feature writers.

Currently the main areas of interest are:

Causes. This area is for announcements and articles related to various causes, action alerts, protests, vigils, benefits, fundraisers, and so forth. In general, articles should be of local interest, though larger state and local causes might be included. In general, the causes should relate in some way to the local Alternative communities or be sponsored by one or more of these communities.

Messages. This area is a catch all for announcements and classifieds. We realize most folks use other sites and apps for personal ads and classifieds.  This area gives site members the opportunity to post announcements, classifieds, personals, roommate searches, and other messages to our targeted Alternative audiences. Messages are free to post for any registered member.  Photos and graphics may be included with your message for a small fee.

Pagan / New Age Articles.  This area is for articles related to the local Pagan and New Age communities.  This can include news and articles highlighting local Pagan and New Age organizations, businesses, personalities, and events; opinions (these should be well thought and well presented, not just a generic "bitch session"); reviews of Pagan and New Age businesses, products, books, events, websites; teaching articles related to various Pagan and New Age paths; and so on.

LGBTQ+ Articles. This area is for articles related to the local LGBTQ+ communities.  This can include news and articles highlighting local LGBTQ+ organizations, businesses, personalities, and events; opinions (these should be well thought and well presented, not just a generic "bitch session"); reviews of LGBTQ+  businesses, products, books, events, websites;  academic articles related to LGBTQ+ history or theory; etc.

Alternative Orientations and Lifestyles. Additional categories and sub-categories may be added in the future depending on whether enough content is submitted to justify creating a full category for any specific community.

The main criteria for articles is that they relate to any of our intended Alternative communities. Exceptions may be made for other entertaining or informative articles. Length of articles can be anywhere from a few paragraphs to a few printed pages -- as long as they are complete, but not overly wordy. Academic articles can be a little longer. Articles with excessive spelling and grammatical errors; that don’t flow coherently; or that are off topic will be rejected or returned for editing. We reserve the right to make minor edits for spelling or grammar, but will mainly accept or reject articles as they are written.

Explicit Articles and Ads

Any Registered member of this site may submit an article.

See the section above for general article guidelines.

Additional guidelines for Explicit articles follows:

Sexually explicit articles should be identified with [Explicit / NSFW] at the top of the article before any other writing. Explicit articles will be featured in the Mature Audiences area rather than the main site. Articles not identified as explicit, but determined as such by the Alternatives HR management will be moved to the Mature Audiences area.

Explicit articles may include sexual how-to articles, news and highlights related to local adult social clubs and businesses; commentary and opinions; reviews of adult events, businesses, books, websites, or products; and academic articles of adult interest.

Additional guidelines for Explicit ads:

Nudity is okay, but not photos containing explicit sexual acts of any kind.

We are fairly tolerant, but draw the line at ads promoting hate, non-consensual sex, extreme sexual acts, or anything illegal (even if we don’t agree with the laws). Commentary on unjust sexual laws is acceptable in the form of an article which may be posted to the main website or to the Mature Audiences area depending on how explicit the content.

We welcome ads and listings from sex workers including adult models, entertainers, dancers, non-sexual escorts, masseuses, and so forth.
